Adding curb appeal to your home’s exterior is a great way to increase the value of your property and make it stand out from other homes in your area.

One of the best ways to do this is with landscape design, which incorporates elements like green space, plants, and decorative structures like fountains and statues to turn your house into an eye-catching property.

To help you get started, Thomas Baskind, a professional landscape designer, offers five tips for boosting curb appeal with landscape design.

Boost Curb Appeal With Landscape Design

#1 Use Native Plants

Native plants are an excellent way to add curb appeal and enhance the overall look of your landscaping.

Here are a few things you should know about using native plants:

  • They’re easy to maintain. Many natives have low water requirements, meaning they can survive without much extra care. This is especially beneficial in dry climates that don’t receive much rain.
  • They provide food for wildlife, which will make them less likely to visit your garden looking for food and potentially damage it in the process.
  • They attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds which will help keep your garden blooming all season long!

As far as improving your curb appeal goes, there’s no better way than by adding some beautiful plants to your yard. The ones mentioned above just happen to be perfect for those conditions!

#2 Incorporate Hardscaping

One of the most important aspects of curb appeal is hardscaping. The landscaping that surrounds your home will make a huge difference in how your yard looks. In addition to it being aesthetically pleasing, you can use landscaping for practical purposes as well.

For example, if you have an area near your entrance that has no landscaping, you could plant some low-growing plants or trees there so that people coming in and out of your home are greeted with a lovely garden.

#3 Use Organic Mulch

Organic mulch is a great way to help your plants grow. It’s inexpensive, can be found at local nurseries and garden centers, and can be applied in layers for optimum benefits.

Here are ways that organic mulch can help you create the best landscape design possible:

  • Organic mulch is free from chemicals like fertilizers or pesticides that may harm plants or pollute the environment.
  • Organic mulch naturally helps retain moisture and keeps plants healthy by maintaining soil temperatures so they don’t get too hot or too cold.
  • Organic mulch improves soil quality because it adds nutrients and decomposes into rich compost that enriches the soil as it breaks down over time.

#4 Plant in Layers

Layer your plants in a way that makes sense for the seasons. For example, during the spring and summer, you might choose a taller plant like a peony or lavender next to a shorter plant like an impatiens. In the fall and winter, layer deeper-rooted plants like hostas or sedums on top of annuals.

#5 Hire a Professional

While it may seem like a simple task at first, designing the perfect garden can be much more difficult than one might think. Hiring a professional landscape designer is worth the investment for many reasons.

At Tom Baskind Landscape Design, we have the experience and knowledge about what plants grow well in your area, which types of trees or shrubs will provide the best shade or protection from wind, and how to design your garden to be low maintenance without sacrificing beauty.
