My name is Regula Tschumi and I live in Switzerland. I am a social anthropologist working as a freelance cultural mediator and photographer in the field of arts and museums.
My history with photography begun during my PhD research in Ghana. But only after completing my studies in 2014 I finally had enough time to dedicate myself more seriously to photography. Up to now, I love most to photograph in Ghana where I keep documenting the religious festivals and rituals. But I also like to do street photography exploring daily life.
I have always photographed for myself; photography makes me happy and it is a good way to explore the world. And especially in Ghana, where I normally don’t make any candid shots, my camera gives me also an opportunity to get in contact with the people I photograph.
In these last years, photography has also become an important part of my anthropological work. Especially my images about the funeral rituals in Ghana have been shown in many museum exhibitions related to this topic, and they have been printed in books, magazines, and newspapers. I am also using these photographs for my lectures when I am invited to talk about my work.
Since last year I had also some success with my street photography. I won the third prize for a single photograph at the 2019 Miami Street Photography Festival, and last year some of my images were shown in various street photography group exhibitions. In January 2020 I had my first street photograph published on a double page in the prestigious German GEO magazine, and in April 2020 I won the Italian Street Photography Festival in the single photo category. All this encourages me to keep shooting, in Ghana and other parts of the world.
