Stunning Images Of Siena International Photo Awards 2020

Here are the winners of the Siena International Photo Awards 2020. There are thousands of photos submitted from 156 countries. This year French Photographer Greg Lecoeur’s stunning shot, “Frozen Mobile Home” of a giant iceberg surrounded by crabeater seals, is the overall winner.

Frozen Mobile Home

Massive and mysterious habitats Iceberg are dynamic kingdoms that support marine life. As they swing and rotate slowly through polar currents, icebergs fertilize the oceans. Carrying nutrients from the earth, they are responsible for life blooms by developing phytoplankton and inﬂuence the carbon cycle by sequestering carbon dioxide from the air. They also thus shelter big animal such as Crabeater seals that spend the entire year on the pack ice.

Death of a Fire Victim

A man tries to save himself and gets down holding an cable during a fire that occurred on the eighth floor of the 22-storey building at the commercial Banani area of Dhaka city around 1:00 pm BST. He lost his control because of extreme heat and fell down in the street and died. It caused 25 deaths and more than 70 others were injured.

Hope

I was at sea off the southwest of Tenerife, where one of the most important populations of resident pilot whales in the world live. We found a severely wounded pilot whale. I took this shot, wich I sent immediately to a veterinarian. The diagnosis was clear, she had been hit by a ship, a propeller had sliced through her vertebrae. The only thing to do was euthanize. She was only six months old. Ship traffic is a huge threat to whales worldwide.

The church Nevigeser Wallfahrtsdom has special architecture. To show concrete ceiling as abstraction in reality I used 8mm. There is very low light and I had to lie on my back in the middle of church to get this image.

It was still very early and the Museum Maat was still closed. But the guard was already walking slowly along the building. There was only a narrow path between the building and the river Tejo and I got wet feet when I took the picture with 12mm.

The Great Grey Owl is well known for its extreme hunting skill. After working on a story about this owl for many weeks in a row i finally got a picture that told all i wanted to show in just one frame. I captured the owl seconds before it attacked a vole under the full moon. It’s truly a hunter of the night.

The World is Going Upside Down

The name orangutan means “man of the forest” in the Malay language. There are 3 varieties of Orangutan, the one in this picture is Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). Adult male orangutans can weigh up to 200 pounds. Flanged males have prominent cheek pads called flanges and a throat sac used to make loud verbalizations called long calls. They mainly feast on wild fruits like lychees, mangosteens, and figs, and slurp water from holes in trees.

Creature of the Night

I had come across a handful of snapshots of black leopards taken in Africa, but as far as I knew, nobody had ever captured a series of high quality images of a wild black leopard in Africa before. I travelled to Kenya in January 2019 and spoke to the guides, landowner and rangers who had seen the leopard. With their help, I set up camera traps and managed to capture this image of the cat under a full moon.

In 2011 I witnessed an incredible dirty storm that occurred during the furious eruption of the Cordon Caulle located in the region of the Rivers in Chile. It was a storm that scared thousands of people who lived in areas near the volcano. Hundreds of people were evacuated and the ash burial erupted many kilometers of forests and fields.

I met the amputated dancer Koichi Omae, originally from Osaka, on my way. At 23, when he was entering his career, a car accident took away all his dreams. He had his left leg amputated below the knee. With great willpower he decided to continue his career as a dancer, aware that without the limb, he would have to spend much more energy not only in performing the artistic gesture, but also just walking normally.

I took this photo inside my home studio in Iran while I was working on a movie project about Afghan immigrants living in Iran. It was the first time that I witnessed in person someone wearing a burka. What struck me immediately upon seeing this woman was that I couldn’t see any part of her body except the soles of her feet as she walked. Since I captioned this photo as “Taboo”, the message I am expressing is one of rebellion.

A fishing net moving underneath the water’s surface. Many local fisherman families along the coastline of Phú Yên province will follow the near-shore currents to catch the anchovy during peak season. Only a small proportion of the entire catch is sold fresh, with most of it being dried or salted. Salted anchovy is the most important raw material to create traditional fish sauce; the humble anchovy becomes the spirit of Vietnamese cuisine.

Mexico, Baja California, Sea of Cortez. I heard stories about the thousand of jacks swimming together at Cabo Pulmo, but nothing could have prepared me for actually entering the water and find this spectacular sight. I was really amazed! and for a time, I just float there and enjoyed them. So in this time a diver in my group was already at the bottom, some 60 feet below. I usually dont put divers in my photos, but in this case I thought it would.

Kick It

I took the picture at Marina Julia, a small seaside town on the Adriatic Sea. I adopted a shooting point from the bottom to go unnoticed and, at the same time and with a lot of luck, to be able to insert the boy who kicks the ball inside the space created by the woman’s arm in the foreground. I believe that this solution increases also perspective depth and creates a surprise effect for the observer.

A leopardess perches in a tree. This photo was taken after sunset, so the usage of a spotlight to light up the leopardess was necessitated. Spotlights are better for the animals than flashes, since it doesn’t induce temporary blindness. If you look carefully, you can see droplets of water on the leopardess’s back; I had been sitting with this leopard for hours in the rain, waiting for her to move.
