Born in 1952 in Vukovar, Croatia, Stanko Abadžić is a distinguished photographer and photojournalist currently based in Zagreb, Croatia.

Abadžić embarked on his photography journey as a photojournalist for the Croatian daily newspaper Vjesnik. During this period, he crafted notable reportages from countries such as Tunisia, Malta, and Turkey, showcasing his keen eye for capturing compelling narratives.

With the eruption of the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, Abadžić relocated abroad, staying away from Croatia for many years. After spending four years in Germany, he immersed himself in the vibrant atmosphere of Prague, the Czech Republic, a city that profoundly influenced his artistic expression. It was during this phase in his career that he transitioned from photojournalism to the realm of art photography, exploring new creative avenues and pushing the boundaries of his craft.

“While residing in the Czech Republic, Abadžić actively participated in a myriad of group and solo exhibitions. The pinnacle of his exhibitions was a comprehensive retrospective showcased at the renowned Dom Jozefa Sudka gallery in Prague, coinciding with the launch of his inaugural monograph, ‘U ogledalu života’ (In The Mirror of Life). His return to Croatia in 2002 marked a significant moment in his artistic journey, as he re-entered the Croatian photography scene with a grand exhibition at the Mimara Museum. During this exhibition, he presented ‘In Absentia,’ his iconic series from Prague, captivating viewers with its profound storytelling.

As an adept art photographer, Abadžić predominantly works with black-and-white film, skillfully evoking a profound sense of nostalgia and bygone eras in his creations. His artistry pays homage to the legacy of photography’s old masters, drawing inspiration from luminaries such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose influence subtly permeates his work.”
