In the world of travel photography, age usually comes with experience. But every once in a while, a fresh voice shows up and flips that idea on its head. That’s exactly what happened when Jamie Smart, just 10 years old, was named Overall Young Winner – Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2025. It’s a jaw-dropper moment—not just because of her age, but because her images comfortably stand shoulder-to-shoulder with photographers decades older.

Overall Young winner – Young Travel Photographer of the Year by Jamie Smart, UK (age 10)

The Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) is no small deal. Run by photographers for photographers, the competition has been celebrating visual storytelling for 22 years and attracts entries from 157 countries. Amateur or pro, beginner or veteran—TPOTY is open to all, and that global scale makes winning even harder. This year alone, photographers from 56 nationalities competed for top honors.

And yet, it was Jamie’s work that cut through the noise.

Her photographs don’t scream for attention. They quietly pull you in. Birds mid-flight. Wildlife caught in unguarded moments. Nature observed with patience, curiosity, and genuine care. There’s no gimmickry here—just sharp timing, clean composition, and a surprising emotional maturity behind the lens.

Jamie’s win isn’t just a personal milestone. It’s a reminder that great photography isn’t about age, gear, or credentials. It’s about seeing the world clearly—and having the courage to wait for the right moment to click.

A Camera at Six and a Half: Where It All Began

Jamie Smart’s photography journey started the way the best ones often do—by accident. During a nature walk, her dad handed her his camera. She was six and a half years old. Something clicked instantly. Birds became her obsession, and the camera became her way of understanding them. Her natural hand-eye coordination showed early, but more impressive was her patience—rare at any age, let alone six.

She began exploring nature reserves and common land across the UK, learning to observe rather than rush. Wildlife photography demands restraint. You wait. You miss shots. You learn. Jamie embraced that rhythm early, developing skills that many photographers take years to build. Her images reflect that quiet discipline—unforced, calm, and deeply attentive to the natural world.

Competing (and Winning) Against Photographers Twice Her Age

What makes Jamie’s achievement truly wild is that she’s not just winning youth categories—she’s holding her own against adults. She has already earned recognition in multiple competitions, often beating photographers far older and more experienced. That consistency tells you this isn’t beginner’s luck.

Her success comes from focus. She sets goals, studies wildlife behavior, and returns again and again to the same environments. Each shoot is practice. Each failure is a lesson. At ten years old, she already understands something crucial: photography rewards persistence more than talent.

That mindset is what separates a promising kid from a serious photographer—and Jamie is clearly the latter.

Growing With Her Gear and Her Vision

Jamie’s gear evolution mirrors her growth. She started with her dad’s Nikon D500 paired with a 70–200mm lens. As she grew stronger and more confident, she moved up to the Nikon D850 and the Z9 with a powerful 600mm lens. But she’s quick to point out that gear alone doesn’t make the image.

In fact, her dad now jokes that she’s better than him at capturing birds—and the results back that up. Jamie understands that technology supports vision, not the other way around. Her images feel intentional, not flashy. The subject always comes first.

Photography With a Purpose: Conservation Through Images

Jamie doesn’t photograph wildlife just because it looks good. She wants her images to mean something. Her goal is to help people see the beauty of nature—and understand why it needs protecting. She’s aware that humans, as apex predators, carry responsibility. That awareness shows up in her work.

Each photograph is an invitation: slow down, look closer, care more. For someone so young, that perspective is powerful. Jamie Smart isn’t just capturing what exists today—she’s advocating for what should still exist tomorrow.
