Every spring, the Netherlands flips a switch—and suddenly the land explodes into color. Red, yellow, pink, purple, orange. Rows upon rows. Miles upon miles. Tulips have always been the country’s calling card, but no amount of postcards prepares you for the real thing. You don’t see these fields so much as step into them. And through the lens of Dipanjan Pal, that experience becomes something closer to art than documentation.

Tulip Fields of Netherlands by Dipanjan Pal

Dipanjan was a Siena Drone Photo Award winner in 2025

Now based in Eindhoven, Dipanjan came to the Netherlands with curiosity and a camera—and quickly found himself chasing light across the countryside. What started as casual exploration turned into an obsession with patterns, geometry, and scale. From the ground, tulip fields feel intimate, almost tunnel-like, pulling you into corridors of color. From above, they transform into something surreal: razor-sharp stripes, abstract grids, and painterly compositions etched directly into the earth.

Dipanjan’s work lives in that tension between closeness and enormity. One bloom versus thousands. One moment versus a season that lasts only weeks. His aerial and landscape photography doesn’t just show you what tulip season looks like—it makes you feel how fleeting it is. For a brief window in mid to late April, the Dutch countryside becomes a living canvas, and then it’s gone. These photographs are his way of holding onto that magic—and sharing it with the rest of us.

Chasing Tulips Across the Netherlands

During his first year living in the Netherlands, Dipanjan did what most newcomers dream about—he went chasing tulip fields. Not just one or two famous spots, but across the country, following bloom cycles, weather windows, and the way light changed the mood of each field. Some mornings were foggy and soft. Others were sharp, graphic, and almost unreal.

This wasn’t about ticking locations off a list. It was about timing. Tulip season is brutally short, and every day looks different from the last. Dipanjan treated the landscape like a moving subject, returning to the same fields again and again, waiting for alignment—clouds, shadows, color harmony. That patience shows. His photos don’t feel rushed or touristy. They feel intentional, calm, and deeply observed.

When Drone Photography Turns Nature Abstract

From above, the tulip fields stop looking like flowers and start looking like design. Dipanjan’s drone photos are where his work really flexes. Lines become stripes. Fields become brushstrokes. Tractors leave subtle marks that feel almost calligraphic. You sometimes have to pause and ask yourself: What am I even looking at?

That sense of visual curiosity is intentional. Dipanjan is drawn to perspectives people don’t usually see—angles that challenge scale and perception. His aerial work turns farmland into abstract art without losing its connection to place. It’s still the Netherlands. Still tulips. Just seen from a viewpoint that makes you rethink the landscape entirely.

From Kolkata to Global Recognition

Dipanjan’s journey didn’t start in Europe. Originally from Kolkata, he bought his first camera in 2014 during university and caught the photography bug on a solo trek to Hampta Pass in Himachal Pradesh. Since then, travel has shaped his vision—especially remote and otherworldly landscapes.

His breakthrough moment came in 2019, when one of his aerial images reached the finals of the ROAM Awards and was announced on stage by Chris Burkard—a career-defining confidence boost. Since then, Dipanjan’s work has been published by major international outlets and exhibited across multiple countries, cementing his place as a global voice in aerial landscape photography.

Photographing Wonder—and What Comes Next

At the core of Dipanjan Pal’s work is wonder. He wants his images to make people stop scrolling and ask questions. To feel small in a good way. To experience landscapes they may never visit themselves. The tulip fields of the Netherlands are one chapter in that mission—a vivid, joyful one—but far from the last.

His next goal? Photographing the receding icebergs of Antarctica. Different palette. Same philosophy. Chase what’s fleeting. Capture it honestly. And share it before it changes forever.
