Iceland has no shortage of jaw-dropping scenery, but in the hands of Gunnar Freyr Gunnarsson, it hits on a whole different level, like something straight out of another planet. His photos don’t just show landscapes; they pull you into vast, cinematic worlds where rivers twist like veins, volcanoes breathe quietly, and coastlines stretch into infinity. There’s scale, mood, and movement in every frame, making Iceland feel alive, raw, and almost surreal.

Born in Denmark to Icelandic parents, Gunnar grew up between two cultures, carrying a deep-rooted connection to his homeland. In 2015, he made a bold move, leaving behind a stable corporate career at PwC after earning a master’s degree in Business and Auditing. He sold everything, bought a one-way ticket, and returned to Iceland, chasing something more meaningful. That leap changed everything.

By 2017, after studying photography in Reykjavik, Gunnar began shaping his signature style. Today, he’s known as “The Icelandic Explorer,” a Canon Nordic Photographer, and a storyteller who blends adventure with artistry. His work, featured in books like Stunning Iceland – The Hedonist’s Guide, captures not just places but feelings.

Through sweeping aerials and intimate ground-level shots, Gunnar transforms Iceland into a dreamscape, proving that sometimes, the most extraordinary worlds are right here on Earth.

From Denmark to the Heart of Iceland

Gunnar’s journey isn’t just about geography; it’s about identity. Growing up in Denmark, he was always connected to Iceland through family, culture, and stories. But it wasn’t until he returned in 2015 that things truly clicked. Iceland wasn’t just a place anymore; it became his canvas.

What makes his perspective unique is that blend of outsider curiosity and insider connection. He sees Iceland with fresh eyes, but with a deep emotional pull. That’s why his images feel so intentional. He’s not just documenting landscapes; he’s rediscovering them.

This dual identity gives his work a rare balance, both exploratory and deeply personal. Every photo feels like a conversation between where he came from and where he belongs.

Trading Corporate Life for Creative Freedom

Walking away from a secure job at PwC isn’t something most people do lightly. But Gunnar knew he wanted more than spreadsheets and office walls. In 2014, he took a risk, sold everything, and chose uncertainty over comfort.

That decision shows up in his photography. There’s a sense of freedom, boldness, and trust in the unknown. You can feel it in the way he chases storms, climbs rugged terrain, and waits for that perfect light.

His work is proof that sometimes the biggest creative breakthroughs come from stepping away from what’s safe. Gunnar didn’t just change careers; he rewrote his entire story, and that fearless energy lives in every frame he captures.

Aerial Views That Redefine Scale

One of Gunnar’s standout strengths is his use of aerial photography. From above, Iceland becomes almost abstract, like textures, patterns, and colors painted across the earth.

Rivers snake through black sand like silver threads, glaciers crack into geometric forms, and volcanic fields look like alien terrain. These perspectives strip away familiarity and replace it with wonder.

What’s wild is how he balances scale. You feel both the vastness of the land and the fine details within it. It’s not just about going higher, it’s about seeing deeper. His aerial shots don’t just impress; they shift how you understand the landscape entirely.

Mood, Light, and the Power of Atmosphere

Gunnar doesn’t chase perfect weather; he chases mood. Fog, rain, and overcast skies are his tools. Instead of bright, postcard-perfect shots, he leans into atmosphere.

Soft light wraps around mountains, mist drifts across valleys, and shadows add depth to every scene. This creates a cinematic vibe that feels emotional, not just visual.

His control of light is subtle but powerful. He knows when to wait, when to shoot, and when to let the environment speak for itself. That patience is what turns a good landscape into something unforgettable.

Finding Beauty in Isolation and Simplicity

Some of Gunnar’s most striking images are also his simplest, like a lone church in the middle of nowhere or a single road cutting through endless terrain. These minimal compositions hit hard.

They remind you just how vast and quiet Iceland can be. There’s a peaceful loneliness in these shots, but also a sense of clarity.

By stripping away distractions, Gunnar lets the subject breathe. It’s not about filling the frame; it’s about giving space meaning. And in that space, viewers find something personal, something reflective.

Storytelling Through Landscape Photography

At its core, Gunnar’s work is storytelling. Each image feels like a chapter in a larger narrative, one about exploration, connection, and the raw beauty of nature.

He doesn’t rely on people to tell stories; the land does that on its own. The curves of a river, the texture of lava fields, and the silence of a snowy plain all carry emotion.

That’s what makes his photography stick. It’s not just visually stunning, it’s immersive. You don’t just see Iceland; you feel it. And that’s the mark of a true storyteller behind the lens.
