About Giorgos Kasapidis
There are many years that Kasapidis George is occupied and as he mentions photography tolerates him. He started on 1976 with a borrowed Lubitel and this flirt still holds at difficult days.
He is considered road photographer for every season because of his jokes as he mentions at the tags of his photos. This expresses him, this tight connection with people on the road and in general at public places. There he creates his own stories, isolating snapshots and if he can give to the reader the feeling of his own presence and personality , this is his huge pleasure.
He does not isolate the landscape’ photos and also social documentaries through reportage and in these cases he will give his own sensual glance through his passion and his exploring mood which has brought him at a difficult position with other photographers of reportage. He does not distinguish the photography as document photography or as artistic work namely its double nature. For him it is a tight connection at the road and he will create his own story. The photos that he takes at this house with the family environment have the same thinking and philosophy.
He will rarely put captions at his photos. They say a photo, a thousand words and in this way he leaves the spectator to determine the title and to participate.
He does not feel an artist, he goes to usual places of his city Salonika that he loves very much and he tries to ensure a different glance. Many of his photos have experiential elements as the same one mentions that his childhood past is chasing him and he tries even now to get over it.
He does not give gravity to elaborations if a heavy and with different cunning tricks with the elaboration determines the value of a photo’s narration. Considering the color, black and white expresses him but he does not turn down color and lately he has included color to his photos. At other times, the subject, the conditions even the mood that he has, determines it.
Photographers who have influenced him are Garry Winogrand, the poet of Prague Josef Sudek, the Tsexoslovakian Josef Koudelka, the young Michael Ackerman, Trent Parke, our own Kostas Balafas, Dimitris Soulas, Nikos Oikonomopoulos and also the written of Platona Riveli.
