In the spiritual world gender roles are adopted for the transcendental purpose of reciprocating with the supreme lord and rendering loving service. In Hinduism remarkable amount of gender variance can be found. People from the Third sex – homosexuals, transgenders, transsexuals etc. identify with these Gods / deities and worship them with great reverence and devotion.

This has reference to the mythological stories of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha and their ‘leela’ (transcendental pastimes ). It is believed that the very name Krishna means ‘all attractive’ and his unsurpassed beauty captivates all beings whether male, female or the third sex ; because Sri Krishna is ‘Adi purusha’ ( the supreme and original male), all other beings are regarded as female in relation to him.

Hence we find many such homosexuals, transgenders and even males, who dress themselves as women and imitate feminine behavior in order to reinforce their identity as ‘Sakhis’ or girlfriends of Krishna to attain the esteemed spiritual emotion known as ‘Sakhi –bhava’.
