Color has the power to stop people in their tracks, and the 2026 Color Photography Awards by The Independent Photographer proved exactly why. This year’s winning images weren’t just visually beautiful; they carried emotion, atmosphere, and storytelling that instantly pulled viewers into each frame. Judged by Jonathan Bertin, a respected voice in contemporary color photography, the contest celebrated photographers who understand how color can completely transform a photograph into something unforgettable.

Taking first place was Wiktor Franko with his striking image “El ultimo Vaquero en la Tierra,” captured in Fuerteventura, Spain. The minimalist composition, filled with bold geometric color planes, feels like a living tribute to Piet Mondrian’s iconic art style. It’s simple, clean, and ridiculously powerful all at once. Second place went to Victor Feillant for “Rainy Days,” a dreamy Paris scene viewed through a rain-soaked window where reality dissolves into texture and light. Meanwhile, Elena Paraskeva earned third place with “A Balancing Act,” a conceptual studio portrait balancing creativity and emotion with stunning precision.

Since launching in 2016, The Independent Photographer has grown into a global photography community that reaches millions each year. And honestly, contests like this are exactly why photographers everywhere keep paying attention.

1. 1st Prize: "El ultimo Vaquero en la Tierra" – Fuerteventura, Spain by Wiktor Franko

1st Prize: "El ultimo Vaquero en la Tierra" - Fuerteventura, Spain by Wiktor Franko - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"The photograph was taken on El Cotillo Street in Fuerteventura. It has a minimalist character, with its strength rooted in the simplicity of the composition. The juxtaposition of clear, bold color planes and geometric forms evokes the work of Piet Mondrian, particularly his iconic paintings with colorful squares and a sense of balanced harmony between form and color."

"There’s always something incredibly fascinating when a picture features such deep colors alongside stark blacks and whites. I love the mysterious atmosphere it creates. It almost feels like stepping into a dream. The clash between the strong colors and the graphic composition creates a real sense of tension — that’s exactly what draws me to photography." – Jonathan Bertin

2. 2nd Prize: "Rainy Days" – Paris, France by Victor Feillant

2nd Prize: "Rainy Days" - Paris, France by Victor Feillant - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"Seen through a rain-soaked window in Montmartre, a passing figure dissolves into light and texture. Forms blur, details slip away, and the moment lingers somewhere between presence and disappearance."

"I’m really touched by photographers who use reality to create something way more abstract. It’s like showing a new version of our world. The colors blend together, the shapes blur, offering a new perspective. This photograph is a perfect example of that approach; it’s genuinely remarkable." – Jonathan Bertin

3. 3rd Prize: "A Balancing Act" by Elena Paraskeva

3rd Prize: "A Balancing Act" by Elena Paraskeva - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"Conceptual studio portrait work."

"A captivating portrait that blends bold Bauhaus-inspired color with surrealist elements reminiscent of René Magritte. The contrast between the electric blue backdrop and the saturated yellow of the pears—lined at an angle to draw the viewer’s eye toward the subject’s face—creates a sense of atmospheric tension that is both whimsical and disciplined. The photographer has transformed a seemingly simple arrangement into a sculptural, avant-garde portrait, where the subtle pop of red lipstick serves as the perfect final accent to a masterful chromatic performance." – The Independent Photographer Editors

4. Finalist: "The Businessman" – Montreal, Canada in 2024 by Mathieu Dalle

Finalist: "The Businessman" - Montreal, Canada in 2024 by Mathieu Dalle - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"Taken in Montreal, Canada in 2024, this image captures a fleeting moment of anonymity during the morning rush. The subject becomes a silhouette among lines and artificial light, embodying the repetitive rhythm of urban life where individuals move with purpose yet remain unseen."

5. Finalist "At the Edge of Form" by James Morris

Finalist "At the Edge of Form" by James Morris - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"What remains once form has receded. Colour lingers as an emotional trace, suggesting memory rather than moment. An exploration of colour as a poetic device. Tones interact with fluidity, allowing emotion to surface indirectly as something unfolding rather than declared."

6. Finalist: "Portrait of a Dancer" – Sevilla, Spain by Ingrid Klevmark

Finalist: "Portrait of a Dancer" - Sevilla, Spain by Ingrid Klevmark - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"The project centers on Gabriela Rocío Martínez Rodríguez, a dancer based in Seville and originally from El Salvador. We focused on the different aspects of dance: the preparation, the movement, and ultimately the immersion. In many ways, these stages began to echo parts of our own experiences of migration — the anticipation, the transition, and the gradual process of finding a sense of place."

7. Finalist: "Almost Meaning" – Madrid, Spain by Ana Garrido Santos

Finalist: "Almost Meaning" - Madrid, Spain by Ana Garrido Santos - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"Fragments try to become language and fail. Letters drift, words almost forming, then slipping away. Below, a body insists. Visible, but incomplete. Present, but not fully there. Neither image nor text manages to hold. Both hover in that unstable space where meaning doesn’t quite arrive. And still, something persists, not as clarity, but as an attempt."

8. Finalist: "A Journey to Stillness" by Soo Burnell

Finalist: "A Journey to Stillness" by Soo Burnell - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"From "At the Onsen" series. In Japan, onsen are hot springs and the bathing facilities and traditional inns around them. There are approximately 25,000 hot spring sources throughout Japan, and approximately 3,000 onsen establishments use naturally hot water from these geothermally heated springs."

9. Finalist: "Hanksville" – Utah, USA by Ellen Bennett

Finalist: "Hanksville" - Utah, USA by Ellen Bennett - The Independent Photographer 2026 Color Winners

"Aerial desert view near Hanksville, a small town in Wayne County, Utah, United States, at the junction of State Routes 24 and 95."
