My name is Raghu Iyer. If there’s one lesson life has taught me, it’s that the journey is rarely straightforward. Often, what we’re meant to do lies far outside what feels comfortable. I spend my days as a senior HR leader, moving between boardrooms and tackling big-picture strategies. But away from the busy corporate world, there’s another side of me that feels even more real, the one drawn to the wild.

I stumbled into wildlife photography in 2018, not because I had a big plan, but just out of curiosity. Those early weekends spent birdwatching slowly turned into something more meaningful, almost spiritual. Over the past eight years, I’ve lost track of the hours I’ve spent wandering through grasslands, wetlands, and forests, not just chasing photos, but searching for stories. The moments I find aren’t staged; they’re raw, honest, and deeply moving gifts from nature for those patient enough to wait.

I never went to photography school or took any formal classes. Everything I know, I picked up outdoors by being patient, paying attention, and learning from my mistakes. For me, photography isn’t about fancy equipment or making lists of species. It’s about watching how animals behave, noticing the play of light, and respecting the wild’s natural flow.

At heart, I’m a storyteller. I hope my photos make people stop, feel something real, and remember their connection to nature. For me, wildlife photography goes beyond creating beautiful pictures; it’s about sparking awareness, encouraging conservation, and embracing our shared responsibility.

Through my photography and the community that’s formed around it, I want to inspire others to get outside, take a breath, and notice the magic that’s always been there, waiting to be seen.

From Curiosity to Commitment: How It All Began

My dive into photography had zero grand plan, just plain curiosity. I was hooked on nature and birds, never guessing it’d grow into something this big. Those early days? Pure. Just weekend walks, watching birds, no expectations.

But then things changed. I saw patterns in how birds moved, how light flipped the scene, how timing made magic. Curiosity turned into full-blown obsession, in the best way.

No classes. No rulebook. The wild was my teacher. I watched, I learned, I failed, bad light, missed shots, wrong place, wrong time. Every mistake taught me more than any manual ever could.

Photography’s not luck. It’s patience. It’s grit. It’s showing up every time.

Learning Without a Rulebook: The Self-Taught Path

Self-taught? It’s tough, but it’s made me. No mentor, no step-by-step guide. Just me and the wild, no teacher more honest.

I learned by doing. Sitting still for hours. Watching animals, chasing the right light and moment. Gear? Overrated. It’s all about awareness.

Doubt? Plenty. Things went sideways. But the wild humbles you and always pulls you back in.

Each sunrise taught me something. Every missed shot made me sharper. Somewhere along the way, I found my voice.

Nature as My Muse: What Truly Inspires Me

What inspires me? Simple: nature. Out there, every second’s a live show, stories of survival, care, and conflict, all unscripted.

I’m hooked on bird behavior. Catching those split-second moments most people miss, that’s where the power is. It’s not just looks; it’s pure feeling.

Forget rare birds or viral fame. I chase moments fleeting, honest, real. Maybe it’s a parent feeding its chick, maybe just a still breath before flight.

Photography’s about earning the wild’s trust. Respect nature, give it time, and it shows you magic you’d never expect.

Recognition, Exhibitions, and Giving Back

Nine exhibitions, eight in India, one in the US. Surreal moments, every single one. Proof that stories break boundaries.

My shots and stories have landed in places like Sanctuary Asia. That’s rewarding, but real impact matters more than recognition.

I’ve mentored and run workshops for over 3,500 people in the wild and online. Teaching’s a huge part of my journey. Sharing, growing, building a community, that’s what I value most.

In the end, it’s not about personal wins. It’s about sparking a ripple that helps more people see, understand, and protect nature.

Inspirations and the Road Ahead

Like any artist, I look up to those who push limits. David Yarrow’s bold stories have left a mark on me. His scale is inspiring.

But nothing tops the field itself. Nature never repeats. Every day, every moment, something new, something unpredictable. That keeps me grounded.

What fires me up? Always growing. There’s no finish line, just more to learn and more stories to tell.

I want to keep evolving, keep sharing, keep connecting with anyone who feels something when they see my work.

Because at the core, photography isn’t just about capturing the wild. It’s about giving it a voice.
