Documentary photographer Richard Sharum embarked on a profound three-year journey through America’s heartland, capturing the resilience and shared humanity of communities often overshadowed by coastal narratives. Traveling from the Canadian to the Mexican borders, Sharum documented life within a 100-mile-wide stretch of the central U.S., covering North Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Engaging with over 4,000 individuals and capturing more than 14,000 photographs, his work culminated in Spina Americana, a powerful visual record of everyday struggles and triumphs. His stark black-and-white imagery portrays the working class—migrant laborers harvesting oregano, a firefighter battling flames, and vendors at local fairs—offering an unfiltered look at the people who form the backbone of the nation.
Challenging the dismissive label of “flyover country,” Sharum’s work brings attention to the overlooked yet essential communities of America’s heartland. His photographs reveal a deep interconnectedness that transcends political and cultural divides, emphasizing the shared experiences of labor, perseverance, and human connection.
By shining a light on these often-dismissed regions, Sharum urges viewers to reconsider preconceived notions and recognize the significance of these spaces in shaping the American identity.
