All About Photo proudly presents Street Photography At The End Of The 80s by German photographer Henk Kosche — a moving online solo exhibition available throughout July 2025. This collection of 16 poignant black-and-white images offers a rare and intimate look into everyday life in Halle an der Saale, an industrial city in the former East Germany. Captured just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, these photographs portray a society suspended between the grit of daily struggle and the quiet dignity of resilience.

For nearly four decades, these 35mm negatives sat forgotten in a small cardboard box. Today, they resurface as historical artifacts and emotional time capsules, offering a glimpse into a world that once existed under the shadow of a divided Germany. Smokestacks loom in the background, casting a haze over city streets, while individuals—young and old—go about their lives, unaware of the monumental changes to come.

Kosche’s work captures the texture of a fading era: children playing in alleys, workers lost in thought, faces etched with endurance. His camera doesn’t dramatize; instead, it observes with empathy and patience, allowing the silent poetry of everyday life to unfold. Each frame reflects a city shaped by state socialism but filled with personal humanity.

More than a photo series, this exhibition is a rediscovery of memory and meaning. It reveals the tension between isolation and unity, stagnation and change. As Western consumerism prepared to sweep through the East, Kosche’s images preserved the final breath of a city before it transformed forever.

Explore this evocative body of work — and experience the strength, fragility, and soul of 1980s East Germany — exclusively on All About Photo this July.
