Photographer Nour El Refai has spent over a year immersed in the heart of Egypt’s Nubian community, documenting their everyday life with care, respect, and a keen artistic eye. Through intimate images of daily rituals, meals, social gatherings, art, and celebrations, El Refai captures not just the beauty of Nubian culture but also its resilience. His work is a quiet yet powerful tribute to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, which has flourished for thousands of years along the banks of the Nile in what is now southern Egypt and northern Sudan.
Despite their rich heritage, Nubians today often live on the margins of Egyptian society, many having been displaced from their ancestral lands throughout the 20th century to make way for dams and reservoirs. The most dramatic shift came in the 1960s, when over 50,000 Nubians were uprooted during the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Yet, as El Refai’s images show, the spirit of the Nubian people endures.
Through his lens—part of the VSCO Artist Initiative—he highlights the traditions and identities that have persisted in the face of forced relocation and cultural loss. His project stands as a visual preservation of a vibrant community navigating the space between memory and modernity.
