A Photographer’s Dedication to the Ethnic Groups in Vietnam

Réhahn’s journey began in 2011 when he arrived in Hoi An. Captivated by the diversity of the country’s cultures, he embarked on a personal exploration to connect with the ethnic groups in Vietnam that make up the country’s rich social fabric. As he interacted with various communities, a profound curiosity inspired him to travel from village to village, tribe to tribe. Simple encounters morphed into a deeper yearning to understand and document the unique stories, traditions, and artistic expressions of each ethnic group. This desire for knowledge propelled him towards a monumental undertaking – to photograph, document, and celebrate the cultural heritage of all 54 ethnic groups and their numerous subgroups.

As Réhahn traversed the diverse landscapes of Vietnam, from the mist-shrouded mountains of the north to the emerald rice paddies of the Mekong Delta in the south, he forged meaningful connections with tribal leaders. His genuine interest and respectful approach earned him their trust, leading to a remarkable act of cultural exchange. Recognizing the significance of preserving their time-honored traditions, these leaders entrusted the artist with precious artifacts – handcrafted textiles woven with intricate patterns, jewelry adorned with symbolic motifs, and ceremonial garments that embodied the essence of their heritage. Witnessing the historical and cultural value of these objects, Réhahn envisioned a central location where both the portraits and these invaluable treasures could be showcased for the world to appreciate. This vision became the cornerstone for the Precious Heritage Museum, a unique cultural center in Vietnam dedicated to preserving the heritage of the country’s ethnic groups, which would remain entirely free for the public to enjoy.

Cultural Exploration at The Precious Heritage Museum in Hoi An

In 2017, after a decade of meticulous documentation and dedication, the Precious Heritage Museum opened its doors in Hoi An, Vietnam. Today, this center for cultural enthusiasts encompasses a sprawling 500 square meters. Within its walls lies a collection of more than 200 photographs; each one captures the essence of these communities through a single person’s face and story. The portraits depict a tribal member—often one of the eldest members of the communities—wearing their authentic traditional attire. The differences in the colors, details, motifs, types of textiles, and accessories of the garments give a visual representation of how diverse these cultures are, while the accompanying stories allow visitors to learn about the person in the portrait as well as important details about their ethnic group. Accompanying these portraits are 62 meticulously preserved traditional wardrobe ensembles. Each piece, an intricate tapestry of colors, textures, and cultural symbolism, offers a tangible connection to the artistic heritage of these communities.

Through Réhahn’s work on the Precious Heritage collection, visitors can encounter the intangible cultural traditions of Vietnam that have been passed down through generations. The museum offers samples of tribal music that the artist recorded on his visits that is impossible to hear anywhere other than in the tribal villages themselves. In addition, the stories of origin, customs, and spiritual beliefs that have shaped the identities of each group unfold through informative displays and multimedia presentations.
