Charak Puja arrives like a burst of fire, faith, and raw emotion, and photographer Prithwiraj Pal captures every pulse of it in this striking photo series. Also known as Nil Puja, this traditional Hindu folk festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is widely celebrated across West Bengal and Bangladesh on the final day of the Bengali month of Chaitra. Through Pal’s lens, the festival feels less like an event and more like living history unfolding in real time.

Held on the night of Chaitra Sankranti, usually between April 13 and 15, Charak Puja carries centuries of devotion and community spirit. Villages gather in celebration, prayer, and ritual, believing the observance brings prosperity for the year ahead while washing away old hardships. Pal’s images spotlight the energy of the crowds, the sacred atmosphere, and the intensity of the Sannyasis, the main participants who perform acts of discipline and spiritual dedication.

What makes these photographs hit so hard is their honesty. You can almost hear the drums, feel the dust in the air, and sense the collective heartbeat of the people gathered under the night sky. Every frame tells a story of resilience, identity, and belief passed from one generation to the next.

Prithwiraj Pal doesn’t just document Charak Puja; he preserves a powerful cultural tradition that still burns bright in Bengal today.

Ancient Roots of Charak Puja

Charak Puja is one of Bengal’s oldest folk festivals, carrying traditions that stretch back generations. Celebrated on the last day of Chaitra, the festival is deeply tied to rural life, seasonal change, and spiritual renewal. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is believed to bring prosperity, strength, and relief from past struggles.

Across West Bengal and Bangladesh, villages gather with devotion, turning open spaces and temple grounds into centers of prayer and celebration. What makes Charak Puja special is how it keeps history alive through rituals still practiced today. Even in a fast-moving modern world, this festival remains a strong symbol of faith, identity, and cultural pride for countless communities.

Rituals, Devotion, and Community Spirit

The heart of Charak Puja lies in its rituals and the dedication of the Sannyasis who lead them. These devotees perform acts of discipline, endurance, and spiritual commitment as offerings to Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. Crowds gather to witness ceremonies filled with drumbeats, chants, incense, and intense emotion.

The atmosphere feels electric, with every moment tinged with sacred energy. Families come together, neighbors reconnect, and entire communities move as one. More than a religious gathering, Charak Puja becomes a celebration of unity and resilience. It shows how tradition can bring people closer while reminding everyone of their shared roots and beliefs.
