French photographer Frédéric Lagrange embarked on a long-anticipated journey into Afghanistan’s remote Wakhan Corridor, a place that had captured his imagination since the late 1990s. Inspired by Eric Newby’s A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, Lagrange was drawn to the stark beauty and cultural richness of this isolated region. However, geopolitical turmoil following 9/11 delayed his plans, leading him instead to explore Mongolia for over a decade. Yet, the dream of Afghanistan never faded.
In 2012, after securing time away from commercial projects and reassuring his family of his safety, he finally set off. Entering from Tajikistan with the help of local guides, he avoided the perilous routes from Kabul and ventured deep into one of Asia’s most untouched landscapes.
Throughout his expedition, Lagrange documented the raw and rugged beauty of the Wakhan Corridor, capturing sweeping mountain vistas and the resilience of the people who inhabit this unforgiving terrain. His images reveal a world seemingly untouched by time—nomadic herders navigating harsh conditions, ancient traditions persisting in remote villages, and an unbreakable connection between the people and their land.
Through his lens, Lagrange offers a rare glimpse into a corner of the world that remains largely unknown, highlighting both the breathtaking scenery and the enduring spirit of those who call it home.
