Julia Kaczorowska – photographer born in Paris and based in Warsaw (Poland), focused mostly on photo reportage and documentary photography. I graduated from the University of Warsaw – Press, Advertising & Publishing Photography and Journalism.
As long as I remember I am trying to combine photography, traveling, and writing. Among my photography, there are many pictures from trips, but I am also not afraid to look for important photographic topics close to me, and sometimes even to look for them in… myself.
One of my projects is called WZORY and it is the most personal one. Skin is the most visible organ of the human body. It has many protective functions, it affects the regulation of our body temperature. Our mood often depends on the appearance of our skin. 1-2% of the skin is covered with white spots. It is called vitiligo – a disease manifested by the loss of pigment on the surface of the skin and/or hair. I have had vitiligo myself since I was 4 years old but I don’t see it as a disease anymore. For me, instead, it is something like eye colour or freckles – just a part of my appearance.
The title of my photo project about vitiligo is WZORY. In Polish, this word has two meanings. The first, patterns and designs. The second, “role model”. Each photographed person, regardless of their nationality, gender and age, can be a role model for others who cannot cope with their condition. In my work, I am not focusing on the dramatic experiences of vitiligo, but rather on people who are on a certain path to self-acceptance. People who treat their spots as something natural, or even consider them as something that makes them special and, in a sense, embellishes their body.
