Cats have a knack for turning any corner into their own kingdom. One minute, they’re holding court on a shop counter; the next, they’re curled up beside market goods or watching the street like neighborhood regulars. They don’t need comfortable beds or surroundings. Give them a sunny patch, a quiet ledge, or a welcoming storefront, and they’ll settle in like they own the place.
That confidence makes Marcel Heijnen’s street cat photography fun to explore. The Dutch photographer has spent years noticing the feline characters woven into city life, capturing them among shop displays, market stalls, doorways, and busy streets. His images are more than cute cat moments. Each frame has its own story, whether it’s a curious stare, an unexpected nap, or a cat looking unimpressed by the world passing by.
There’s plenty of humor here, but also a sense of place. The cats share their surroundings with shopkeepers, customers, and communities, becoming part of the neighborhood’s rhythm. Projects such as Shop Cats of Hong Kong and City Cats of Istanbul show how these animals fit into urban life. In this collection of 35 photographs, Heijnen reminds us that wherever cats settle, they bring personality, warmth, and pure joy.
