There is a particular quality to taking photographs of people when they have forgotten that a camera is even present. Whether it’s a short burst of laughter, a moment of quiet reflection, a stranger absorbed in thought, or a gesture that happens at just the right moment, such scenes can express more than any carefully arranged portrait ever could. This genuine human energy is at the heart of the Urban Photo Awards 2026, and the finalists this year show a great deal of it.
The international photography competition got almost 20,000 entries from about 5,000 photographers all over the world, so it was a pretty difficult route to reach the final stage. The 35 photos that made it to the final stage, all of which depict people, clearly demonstrate the amount of storytelling that can take place in a single frame.
The URBAN Photo Awards has long outgrown its status as simply an online competition. Through international exhibitions, original photo books, media coverage, and various events, the contest gives photographers a chance to take their work into the real world; its exhibitions culminate at Trieste Photo Days, where the awards ceremony and group exhibitions come together to showcase the best images.
The results will be revealed on 24 October 2026, but there is already a great deal to admire in them. Whether it’s genuine encounters on the streets or close-up, personal moments, these photographs show us that cities are not merely composed of buildings and busy roads; they are made up of people and their stories.
