The project had the working title ‘Integral lens: an integral approach to the study and representation of the built environment through the photographic medium’. The University of Tennesse, Knoxville and prof. Mark DeKay at the College of Architecture and Design, author of the book ‘Integral Sustainable Design’, was the sponsor and affiliated institution. The project included: visiting and photographing contemporary architecture and exploring photographically cityscapes from American cities; meeting with architects, photographers, artists and other industry related professionals; exploring and formulating an integral approach to architectural photography.
The itinerary from October 2015 to March 2016 covered the following cities: Knoxville, New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Miami, New Orleans, staying in each location from two to four weeks.
During this period, approximately 9,600 miles were covered by plane, 4,200 miles by car, 1,300 miles by public commuting, and 750,000 steps walking. In total about 12,000 still images were taken from 150 buildings and locations, 65,000 images in time-lapse video, and 20 meetings and interviews.

Pygmalion Karatzas is an architect and self-taught photographer focusing on editorial and artistic architectural photography. His images are being featured regularly in numerous publications in Greece and abroad. His three collections ‘Morphogenesis’ are available through blurb.com. Distinctions include international competitions Architizer A+ 2014, Sony World Photography Organisation 2014, International Photography Awards 2014 & 2015, Spider Black & White Awards 2014.
He has participated in group exhibitions in Aigion, Athens, Thessaloniki, Rome, London, and was among the 2015 Best Pictures of the Year for Interior Design Magazine. His on-going research is towards an integral approach to architecture, sustainability and art. Based in Aigion, travels in Greece and abroad for his personal projects and assignments.
