#1. People Photography, Culture Winner – Ghost of Asaro by Jatenipat Ketpradit
Gurupoka mountain peak in the wild forest of Papua New Guinea is the land of ghosts!!! They emerged slowly from the trees, their movements resembling a devil’s dance, seamlessly blending with the forest. Their terrifying heads were attached to thin, grey bodies. Abruptly, they vanished and reappeared behind the visitor like phantoms. They were the ‘Asaro Mudmen,’ indigenous warriors residing in a high valley along the Asaro River in Papua New Guinea. Today, the Asaro Mudmen stand among the most prominent and renowned tribes of Papua New Guinea. Whenever they don their mud masks, assuming the guise of white demons, they embody the spirit that drove the enemy from their cherished village and homeland.

This series intends to portray the strength and resilience of Angolan women. They are burdened with responsibilities, obligations, and duties that are unfairly not shared by their husbands or partners, in particular the hard work they have to face in order to feed their children. Despite these circumstances, they manage to play the role of mothers in an exemplary way, keeping their children close to them while they work, breastfeeding them in the most adverse environments, and showing open and sincere smiles even under the weight of fatigue.

What an amazing week diving with Carcharodon carcharias (great white sharks) at Guadalupe Island on the Nautilus Under Sea . You can choose to watch life though a screen or go out and live it. Diving with great whites has been a dream of mine ever since I could remember reading about Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Unfortunately this opportunity to dive with great white sharks in Guadalupe is no longer possible since the Mexican Government shut down all operations in that area. I am grateful for not only capturing a photograph of a lifetime, but also for the experience of a lifetime.

#21. People Photography, Culture Winner – Floating Market by William Idiart Rodriguez
The lens captures a Vietnamese woman guiding her small rowboat through Halong Bay. The limited space of her boat is filled with goods, a sensitive portrait of a local ritual. As she maneuvers between the vessels, the floating commerce comes alive. The way she is looking at the camera; there is a distinct kindness in her face. It is clear that the colors and shapes of the items she is transporting beautifully balance with the textures of the rippling water.
