There’s something about black-and-white photography that just hits different—like nature suddenly drops its loud colors and starts whispering secrets. The Monochrome Photography Awards 2024 proved that once again, spotlighting a jaw-dropping lineup of amateur winners who turned the natural world into pure visual poetry. These artists didn’t rely on color to wow us. Nope. They leaned into mood, contrast, composition, and that soulful, old-school magic only monochrome can deliver.
From moody mountain landscapes to mist-wrapped trees, from underwater dreamscapes to birds frozen in mid-flight, each winning image feels like stepping into a moment where time slows down. The shadows feel deeper. The highlights feel sacred. And the silence? It’s almost loud enough to touch. These photographers absolutely crushed the assignment, revealing how the absence of color can actually make nature feel more emotional, more honest, and way more intimate.
The animal and bird portraits in this collection bring a whole new level of elegance—half wild energy, half meditative calm. Underwater shots take on a ghostly, surreal vibe, while vast landscapes look timeless, like they’re pulled straight from an Ansel Adams daydream. You start to realize monochrome isn’t just a style—it’s a mindset. A way of seeing the world stripped of distractions, where every line, curve, and texture stands front and center.
So here they are: 25 monochrome nature photos that remind us that beauty doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it breathes. And sometimes, it wraps you in a kind of stillness you didn’t even know you needed.

#1. 1st Place Winner: "Fish Balloon" by Angela J Sanchez, United States

"While looking for marine megafauna in the Sea of Cortez, our group spotted what appeared to be a large bait ball of fish. Upon closer inspection, the ball of fish was determined to be balloonfish. Balloonfish have a defensive mechanism where they can fill up with water or air into a spherical shape with protruding spines. Adults are usually solitary, but I later learned that juveniles may form aggregations."
#2. 2nd Place Winner: "Ghost of Cassiopeia" by Peter Hergesheimer, United States

"Known as Sh2-185, the hydrogen gas in this nebula is lit up by the nearby star, Gamma Cas. Sh2-185 is some 550 light years from earth in the constellation Cassiopeia."
#3. 3rd Place Winner: "Sealy Games" by Fabrice Jaine, Australia

"Three Australian sea lions (Neophoca cinerea) play in the shallow waters off Hopkins Island, South Australia. The species is the only endemic pinniped in Australian waters and is currently classified as Endangered due to recent population declines linked to their historical harvest for the fur trade. Each sea lion colony is genetically distinct from neighbouring colonies, meaning these three cheeky individuals are likely related."
#4. "After winter sleep" by Tom Pavlasek, Czech Republic

#5. "Alone" by Ralf Gebhardt, Germany

"This photo was taken spontaneously on a ski tour in the mountains in Austria."
#6. "Will Trees Forget Autumn?" by Brendan Jack, Australia

#8. "Caring mother" by Fernando Guiguet, Brazil

"The photo was taken at the Botanical Garden in São Paulo this year. I was walking a trail when I noticed a noise among the trees. I started looking and saw this adult marmoset carrying three babies (one of them on the other side and cannot be seen in the photo). There was an interesting light coming through the forest, I took the camera, that already had a long-range lens, an took the photo."
#9. "Cave scenery" by Petr Polách, Czech Republic

"This photo was taken in the flooded La Concha cave in Yucatan, Mexico. The extensive cave system in the Yucatan is characterized by beautiful stalactite decoration in many shades of color. Colours play an important role in cave photography, but the variety of cave shapes and stalactite decoration gives the photographer the opportunity to capture their beauty even in black and white photography, emphasising their mysterious atmosphere."
#10. "Corn Lily" by Doug Hammer, United States

"I love a good, swirly, twisty, corn lily. It seems that a corn lily can be captured from any angle, giving the impression that the "photographic design" will naturally emerge. However, upon closer examination, considerable effort is required to determine which part of the swirly-leafed plant to photograph and which design elements, if any, should be incorporated."
#11. "Fern and other plants" by Bernd Fengler, Germany

#12. "Field of Fog" by Jim Chung, Canada

"Sunrise fog blankets the order of a farmer’s field."
#13. "Fungus Horizon" by Endy, Singapore

"Like sea of waves to the edge of horizon, Crepidotus sp. Fungus grew and covered a fallen tree, doing their jobs as nature’s decomposer and recycler of organic matters. Taken in Mar 2011, at Windsor Nature Park, Singapore"
#14. "Incoming" by Catherine Becker, Germany

"Photographing waves is exhilarating, the anticipation, the speed, waiting for the best one. For hours we stood atop a cliff watching the waves rolling in. Waiting for the perfect one."

#19. "Passage of time" by Kibong Nam, Republic of Korea

"There is a beautiful tidal valley in the West Sea of Korea, and I consider it a great fortune to be able to capture the rising seawater here. If you watch the rising water in the beautiful tidal valley for an hour, the fantastic beauty of the Z tidal valley unfolds."
#20. "Penguin beach" by Steffen Foerster, United States

"A group of king penguins is gathering on a deserted beach in the Falkland Islands."
#21. "Pool Party" by Angela J Sanchez, United States

"During the month of March 2024, countless numbers of zebras and wildebeest descended upon a lake in Ndutu, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania. Although zebras are mostly visible in this photo, there were plenty of wildebeest participating in the “pool party”. It was an amazing and gregarious scene to witness, including the extremely vocal zebras."
