In a world filled with polished perfection and digital enhancements, German photographer Anna Försterling takes a different approach—one that strips away the noise to reveal something far more powerful: the human soul. Based in Dresden, Anna specializes in black and white portrait photography that is raw, honest, and emotionally resonant.
Anna’s journey into photography began with curiosity and a borrowed camera. Though she had always been surrounded by photography in some way, it wasn’t until six years ago that she began to pursue the craft consciously. A one-year internship with a Dresden photographer introduced her to the technical side of the camera, and her passion only deepened from there. Her early experiments focused on nature—capturing the delicate details of animals and plants with a macro lens—but her true calling emerged during a three-year photography training, where she discovered the power of human portraiture.
Today, Anna is known for her deeply emotive, naturalistic portraits. Eschewing makeup, jewelry, and heavy styling, she aims to capture people as they truly are. “The primary feature of a portrait is the human presence,” she explains. Her timeless black and white images are devoid of trends or visual noise, focusing instead on the expressions, gestures, and silences that define us.
Anna shoots exclusively on film, using a 35mm camera to ease into the session and a Pentax 67 medium format camera for the final portraits. She favors Kodak and Fuji films for their tonal quality and texture, which complement her minimal, soulful aesthetic.
More than just images, Anna’s portraits are quiet reflections—each one a moment of connection between artist and subject. With an eye for authenticity and a devotion to timeless visual storytelling, Anna Försterling continues to capture what lies beneath the surface: the soul in its most honest form.
