Robert Capa - Inspiration from Masters of Photography

If you say Street Photography is not for amateurs then, War Photography is not even for Professionals.

A dedicated individual with everlasting energy for passion. Knowing what does it mean to take a risk and fearlessly evading it. Yes this is Robert Capa for all.

He knew what war was like, he was very well despised for it. Spoken to be the greatest war photographer in the “World Picture post” from 1938, published some 26 pictures by him during the Spanish civil war.

His early life was a tragedy driven out of Berlin by the Nazi regime, his family settled in Paris during 1933. After that, he started covering the Spanish civil war, and during the tough times of second world war, he flied to cover the Omaha beach on D-day(June 6th 1944), for what he is well known for. He exposed some 4 rolls of film for the world to see. Out of which only 11 pictures survived some severe heat in darkroom cabinet.

After this incident, Capa was tired of war but he didn’t want to miss out covering the Birth of Israel in 1949. He did go for the assignment, and at the same time he mastered along with Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour, George Rodger, and William Van divert in giving birth to Magnum Photos. The one and only international agency for freelance photographers till date!

It was during the Indo china war, though he has promised himself not to cover a war for at least some years, but was found to accept an invitation to cover this war-his last war. During May 25, 1954 his French regiment was passing a dangerous area which was under fire. There was heavy action all over, and Capa couldn’t resist, he wanted to photograph the action. Some minutes later his regiment heard a loud explosion. Capa has stepped on a land mine, his left leg wasn’t there where it use to be, but all in pieces. The other journalists rushed him to a field hospital, where he was announced dead already with his camera hanging right next to him.

Known for his absolute brilliance and redefining war photography Journalism, Every year The Overseas Press Club issues an award for aspiring photographers in the name of Robert Capa Gold Medal.

His favorite quote “If your picture isn’t good enough, you’re not close enough.”
