Joseph Rosa, chief curator at the US National Building Museum, once stated that photography has become the lens through which we observe and analyze the evolution of architecture. The positive aspect of this reality is that architects and the public around the world can participate in this educational process, on the other hand, the negative aspect is the trap of images dominating over it’s core purpose: the actual experiencing of architecture.

My work (along with the recent wave of superb amateur photographers using a fine art approach) is trying to inspire and motivate people to not only view architecture as a two dimentional image representation but to motivate them to experience it comprehensively.

Long exposure photography and fine art post-processing makes people slow down, observe buildings closer, do research and field survey, revisit locations under different light and weather conditions, and by doing so enriches their understanding and awareness of the build environment.

Pygmalion Karatzas was Born in Greece in 1973. Studied Architecture at the Technical University of Budapest, Hungary (1991-94), Urban Design at Heriot-Watt University of Edinburgh, Scotland (1995-97) and Ecovillage Design Education at Findhorn (2006).

Has been participating in photographic groups since 2006, using various techniques (long exposure, HDR, panoramic, fine art). Fascinated with all forms of human expression and creativity artistically, socially and spiritually with an integral approach as the overreaching conceptual framework.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Shelby Robinson and I am just short of 19 years old. Looking back 5 years I never would have believed photography would dominate my life as much as it does today. I was actually lost in what I would become in this great world. However, that changed two years ago when I picked up a new DSLR and began taking those awkward beginner shots everyone takes. (The joy of flowers and bokeh!) When I realized just how much a camera can accomplish I focused more on learning the technical side as I tried to develop a style. Many hours of internet and Photoshop exploration I finally moved onto where I am now. Many people will speak about how a certain object or hobby changed their life but I can honestly say photography has given me life.

What made you passionate about photography especially these conceptual art photographs?

I first stumbled across conceptual photography on Flickr through various artists. (It’s been so long I couldn’t remember the names) It was so inspiring to see that one person could create a part of themselves or their imagination with a simple photo. I cannot draw or paint or any sort of artistic output of that form, however seeing these people put together such beautiful work revealed that I could form an outlet for my creativity. I wanted to tell these stories which had been trapped in my mind; I desired to share with others my feelings in an artistic manner. I just wanted to create. So I did; I took my camera, my mind and connected the two!

Could you please discuss your thought process before going for shoot?

I always try my hardest to plan prior to a shoot. Of course this does not always happen so then I’ll just head into the woods and work with what I can! But a good photo involves planning and preparation. It seems most of my ideas come to me as I lay in bed waiting to fall to sleep. Of course my mind races and I am too eager to close my eyes. The next day (or even the night of) I will sketch my ideas. Having concepts mapped out helps with organization and processing. From there I will take my gear and props and head onto location whenever the time comes!

Your future goals and ambition?

My dreams for the future would be that it is surrounded by photography; I hope to never lose my focus or passion. Where ever life may take me, I only pray that it may be within the photographic realms.

One secret you would like to share on photography front with our readers?

Hmm… a secret? You have to earn those!
Okay, okay fine! I am not that mean. My photogenic secret would be in order to be successful in photography you must focus on yourself and your growth. I have seen so many people fall apart because they were worried about catching up with others or comparing themselves to levels which are at unreachable stages. As a photographer one must create to grow. Create for yourself and not based on others and you will be the happiest : )

Can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Tatyana Tomsickova, I am from Bulgaria, married and currently live in Prague, Czech Republic. Mother of two beautiful boys, who are the reason to start shooting more intensively. I have had passion for photography from my childhood, but could afford to buy my first DSLR only after the birth of my first born. I have been taking pictures almost four years now and I cannot imagine my life without my camera.

What fascinates you to capture these precious kids?

Children are pure, innocent and happy creatures, with geniune emotions, nothing about kids is artificial. This is the reason why I love taking pictures of children. I love to capture the pure emotion, the happiness and the sadness, the surprised faces and even the tears – everything is so pure.

What is the secret behind to capture a goodportrait?

Patient!!! For me photographing kids is all about patient. You have to be armed with patient, you have to let the kid play his own game and just stay aside and take pictures! That is how you will get the most natural, candid pictures. I usually prepare everything for the session, then just leave the child to play on the place I have chosen for shooting and I stay on hold, waiting for the right moment, the right look and the right smile. When photographing children you have to take in consideration that children get tired very quickly, so get ready with all the settings of the camera before you leave the child to play, so you won’t miss a precious moment, because the camera was not set right. You always have to choose your background very cautiously, no distracting object behind the child, no trees, growing from his head.

Any sweet memories while you capture these kids?

I can recall a few sweet memories. Once I took a picture of my boy, splashing in a little pond, of course he gave me couple of sweet pictures, good splash and funny face and then jump in the pond with the shoes.

Your Inspiration?

My inspirations are my kids, with their sweet faces and the thousand different looks they can give me in a few minutes. Of course I obtain inspiration from pretty much everything that surrounds me. If I see an interesting place, I always imagine what good image can be done there; I go home and then go back to the place with the appropriate props, clothes, persons at the right time and light. And that is pretty much the most important thing – to be on the right place at the right time and not to forget the camera at home.

Any advice for our readers?

Always have your camera in your bag, because you never know when you will stumble on something interesting and unique. And you never know when you will hit a place with a beautiful light!

Can you please introduce yourself?

Hi my name is Rohan Reilly and I am a photographer based in West Cork, Ireland. I specialise in black and white long exposures of the sea, but also love traditional landscapes and architectural photography work as well.

How did you get started in photography?

I started to become interested in photography five years ago, when I lived in Barcelona. I was inspired by the architecture of Antoni Gaudi and Santiago Calatrava amongst many others. I also visited the museums of Dali, Picasso and Miro with my wife who has encouraged me hugely with my forays into photography. I started in the city and then moved to the sea, that is one of the many reasons I love to visit Barcelona as the sea and city are so close to each other, you can wake up look at the sky and decide whats best to shoot.

What is the secret behind to capture these great landscapes?

I spend a lot of time researching my subjects, checking the weather, checking tide times etc. I quite often know how I will process a scene even before i get there. Vision is so important, understanding what you want from a scene makes it easier to achieve. I like to work in flat light for my BW seascapes, I love mist, soft rain and moody clouds, it is in these conditions that I feel most comfortable. I love to be alone at a scene and to study the subjects, working the angles before I take out my camera. I usually make only one or two compositions of a subject and then try many exposures to create the mood I want.

Can you please describe your post-processing technique?

I generally capture multiple exposures of a scene. I open all my images into LightRoom and then assess which exposure or exposures I think will work best. Sometimes I will use up to three shots for one image, sometimes just one, it all depends on the scene, I don’t use composites from other scenes just bracketed exposures when needs be. I don’t use any grads just b+w ND filters, a 10 stop and 3 stop.

I then convert these exposures to B&W in LR, and process them individually before sending them to Photoshop where I use layers and masks to blend the exposures together. I will then save and open again in LR and make crops and final adjustments to gradients and vignettes here.

I generally work at night and then review the following day, I work on an image for days at a time. I study the image from around the room, (from where I make tea is a popular spot) I look at my images large and small, if an image works small it will definitely work large. I review my images on White / Light grey / Grey / Dark Grey and Black backgrounds. This is a new function in C6 that I love, each background reveals something new and I want my images to present themselves perfectly on all backgrounds.

What is your inspiration?

I am continuously inspired with the landscape around me, I live in a very beautiful part of Ireland. I also read books and look at websites by photographers of all styles. I am also active on Flickr, Facebook and Google + and am inspired continuously by my friends and contacts. I also find inspiration through other arts, films and music too. These are very enlightening to explore compositions, lighting and moods.

Your Gear?

I use a Canon 5D Mark II, 17-40mm f4, 50mm f1.4 and a 85mm f1.8, a Slik Tripod, shutter release and 10/6/3 stop B+W ND Filters.

Any tips or advises for aspiring photographers?

• Make things easier for yourself, have a simple workflow and organised folders make your work less stressful and then you will be relaxed when working.
• Check weather forecasts, tide times, use google maps, TPE, exposure apps, all these things help so much, so you get it right more often.
• I think some form of originality is very important, which is very hard to achieve and will become even harder. You can develop this through style and signatures, but these will take time to develop. There is no need to rush, all things take time but hard work and dedication will pay off.
• Finally and most imposrtantly always believe in, and enjoy your work.

I would like to thank you for asking me to do this interview, I always learn a little bit more about myself when I write things down. Also I have been following your site from afar for some time and it is an honour to be included amongst so many inspirational photographers.

Shooting smoke is one of the hardest part in sense of lighting. Its always better to have a dull dark background to highlight the bright smoke from the cigar. Try out slow shutter speed which would definitely give you fantastic results too. Good Luck and No Smoking!

Biography

Martin Stranka is a self-taught professional photographer, born on April 13, 1984 in Czech Republic. Martin’s distinctive vision of photography etched as a unique space located in a balance and serenity, while his sophisticated and rewarding images exists in that narrow space of a few seconds between dreaming and awakening. During the last three years Martin has gathered over 40 remarkable international photography awards, from different competitions including Professional Photographer of the Year, Emerging Talent Award in Nikon International Photo Contest, Sony World Photography Awards, EISA Photo Maestro or International Photo Awards and Digital Photographer of the Year both two times in a row.

His solo and group exhibitions were possible to see from South and North America, through Europe up to Asia. His photographs were exhibited in places like New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Milan, London, Miami, Paris, Dubai, Germany, Prague, Brussels, North Carolina, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Vienna and many more. Martin’s work was presented in prestige galleries such as Getty Images Gallery, Saatchi Gallery and Robert Fontaine Gallery. His work was exposed next to artists like Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz, Banksy, Damien Hirst, Helmut Newton, Albert Watson or Roxanne Lowit.

He loves the smell of autumn and sparkling grains of dust floating in the sunset.

How would you define your style of photography?

Honestly I think I do not name my photography style. I could say it is something like illustrative and conceptual, emotive and minimalist. Well, I could describe my “art world” like a space where I deny the laws of physics and erase the border between conciseness and dreaming. The world, where impossible becomes evident, and the perception of reality is shifted to its next level. I perceive photography as an unique space located in a balance and serenity. My work exists in that narrow space of few seconds between dreaming and awaking.

Your thoughts on these stunning moodaholic portraits, the ideas and thoughts behind each of them?

Try to imagine the story in a sentence. Try to imagine the story in a word. Can you imagine the whole story in one photo? That is my answer. Here you can find answers to your question. Each photograph is captured with tens, hundreds, thousands of feelings which I felt at that moment. And believe me, even though it may not initially appear, very often they were feeling full of hope. It is also one of the things that fascinates me still in the photo. How can a picture says so many words, sometimes more than could ever a whole book. Every single photo has its own story behind. One photo, one story, one photo shooting.

How do you choose the right ambiance, the lighting and the mood to convey?

I have never thought about the aim of my photographs. It is something automatic and something that grows into needs inside of me.

Your pictures are absolute and gentle emotional statements! What drives you to produce such work?

For myself it is a kind of my own diary. And diary pages are parts and moments of my life. Each photograph is a separate element of my photographs and it still fits in to the same coherent body of my work. My personal inner world drives me forward. I’ll take pictures until I will have the need to materialize my dreams, shows my reality, thoughts and communicate with myself.

How do you define and get into the zone of mood before getting into shooting a particular picture?

I feel how much daily usual moments become my inspiration. Somethig like dust grains floating in the light of sunset – wow, thats something what I could stare at for ever. Or the smell of the autumn – those short 3-4 weeks when the nature is prepapring for sleep, all those leaves falling from the trees, this is it. I know it could sound quite silly and childish, but I love these daily moments. And all those daily moments gets me into the creative mood.

For Martin, when does his picture achieve completeness?

When? When I feel like the photo can absolutely drag me in and I can experience the moment again. Then I know it is finished and complete.

Few words on the post-processing and color selection techniques in your pictures?

I do not see post-production as an individual part. For me the photo is the result of a complex process from born an idea to the actual print on a photo paper. I think I have no final version in my head from the beginning. It’s something similar like having your own child. You know that you will have a boy or girl, you have a rough idea of how you want him to shape and educate. But whether you like it or not, your child will be quite different from your first ideas and wishes. Result is always a little different and distinct from your first ideas. And whole this process takes days and days, weeks and weeks. But if you need to know the spent time in imaging software, it can take around 5 hours I guess.

What is your gear and how important are they for you.

I use camera Canon 5D – I love its full frame chip, lenses: Canon 17-40mm L, Canon 70-200mm L, Canon 50mm f1,4. I use two 400Ws flash sources and Photoshop CS5. All gear is only a tools. An opened mind is a catalyst.

Any secret / advice for aspiring youngsters and enthusiasts in photography?

Be yourself, loved by a few and not understood by the rest. My one and only advice I can give to all creative people.
