Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, I’m Tamas Bernath originally from Kanjiza (small town in the North of Vojvodina, Serbia). I am currently living in Budapest, Hungary. I have a camera with me all the time.

How did Photography happen to Tamas?

In 2007 I traveled to the USA to work there for the summer. The first stop was New York City. I was wandering around the Time Square looking for a phone booth to call home. Finally I have found one and there was a little point and shoot camera in it. This is how photography started for me and I take photos ever since.

Speaking about your b/w photographs they are so haunting and very deep in composition and strangeness.. How do you achieve this?

I am sort of documenting my everydays, which is funny to say, because these photos are not really documentary photos, they rather have their own reality. This is one of the most exciting thing about photography for me. How a captured moment, delimited from reality can be transformed to totally different thing seeing on a paper or screen. When I am photographing, I am intuitive, try not to think too much, I follow my guts. I don’t look for locations to photograph, instead, I photograph where I actually am, and I never know what will I take a picture of until I see it.

What do you think is the most vital thing you want to convey through this stunning images?

I don’t think I can describe in words, but if they work at all, I think they work on an emotional level. I let viewers to read their stories, their own memories into them. That’s why I don’t like to caption each of my photos, except maybe the date and the place where it was taken. I made and self published my first photo zine called ‘Filling the Gaps‘. It was taken during a gap year that we spent in Ireland with my girlfriend (now wife) as volunteers. After we finished our studies we had a felt the need to get away for a while, before we settle down. The zine is some sort of record of that year, sure, but it is also open for interpretation.

Your gear?

Nothing fancy or up to date stuffs: just a few lightweight compact cameras and an old DSLR. I also shoot with my phone sometimes as well.

Where does Tamas get inspired from?

Inspiration comes from everywhere, but Magnum photographers have a great influence on me for sure.

Is there any particular reason you prefer b/w to color?

It leaves more space for imagination, it is less obvious, I like how it could spark my fantasy and with this how a photograph could work on a different level.

Your future goals and aspirations?

I am currently working on my new zine, I like this format very much because of it’s directness and the freedom it could give in terms of showing a body of work. Putting stuff online is a great thing, but I prefer to show my work in printed format. I would like to focus on that.

One thing you have learnt the hard way in photography, you wanted to always share?

Actually I’m still learning: How to edit tight.

Thanks again for this wonderful opportunity, any final thoughts?

My pleasure. Thanks for having me. Keep up good work with 121clicks team.
