The Gangasagar Mela that takes place in West Bengal, every year on the auspicious day of maker Sankranti, is one of the largest congregations of Hindu Pilgrims in India. Commoners, huge in number, flock to the southern part of Bengal where the holy river Ganges joins the Bay of Bengal.

People from not only all over the state and the adjacent states but far and beyond, travel all the way to take a holy dip here which, they consider, can get them rid of all their sins. The trouble they take to complete this journey is a vivid contrast of the trust and peace of mind that reflect on their faces. This series of photographs is a documentation of their experience.

About Sushavan Nandy

I have been an animation artist, working for a game developing company, belonging to the suburbs of Kolkata. My photography started with a point and shoot camera, about 4 years back. In a few months, I realized, it was more than just a hobby. Photography had by then become a reason for my sustenance. My areas of interest are Photojournalism and Travel. My best photograph is yet to be shot.
