Raghu Rai was born in 1942, in a small village called Jhang in Western Punjab, today’s Pakistan. He started his career as a photographer for the “Statesman” newspaper, slowly he started to prove himself in the field of photo-journalism. He also did do an exhibition of his photographs in Paris during 1971, it was during this time he caught the eyes of Henri-Cartier-Bresson the co-founder of Magnum Photos. Impressed by his talent, Henri then nominated Raghu Rai to join Magnum group. His editorial pictures have contributed largely towards the social, cultural and public themes. Being specialized in covering the life in India, Rai has produced more than 20 books on Photography.

His Phenomenal and lifetime achievement would be for Green Peace, when he did a in depth documentary on the chemical disaster which happened in Bhopal during 1984. He also exhibited his works in supporting the lives of victims, who haven’t received any compensation.

  • He is the only Indian to contribute to the Magnum Photos.
  • The Only Photographer from India to have achieved Padma Shree – a prestigious award from the Government of India.
  • He has served more than three times as a Jury for the most celebrated World Press Photo.
