Irresistible kids they are, see what Tatyana has to speak about her brilliant photography of kids. They are sweet and responsive to her camera, Tanya loves to capture all of those innocent splendid and joyous moments with kids. She inspires from everything around her and loves every minute of her time spent with kids and of course camera. Listen to her answers and rejoice with these joyful light pictures of beautiful kids.

Can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Tatyana Tomsickova, I am from Bulgaria, married and currently live in Prague, Czech Republic. Mother of two beautiful boys, who are the reason to start shooting more intensively. I have had passion for photography from my childhood, but could afford to buy my first DSLR only after the birth of my first born. I have been taking pictures almost four years now and I cannot imagine my life without my camera.

What fascinates you to capture these precious kids?

Children are pure, innocent and happy creatures, with geniune emotions, nothing about kids is artificial. This is the reason why I love taking pictures of children. I love to capture the pure emotion, the happiness and the sadness, the surprised faces and even the tears – everything is so pure.

What is the secret behind to capture a goodportrait?

Patient!!! For me photographing kids is all about patient. You have to be armed with patient, you have to let the kid play his own game and just stay aside and take pictures! That is how you will get the most natural, candid pictures. I usually prepare everything for the session, then just leave the child to play on the place I have chosen for shooting and I stay on hold, waiting for the right moment, the right look and the right smile. When photographing children you have to take in consideration that children get tired very quickly, so get ready with all the settings of the camera before you leave the child to play, so you won’t miss a precious moment, because the camera was not set right. You always have to choose your background very cautiously, no distracting object behind the child, no trees, growing from his head.

Any sweet memories while you capture these kids?

I can recall a few sweet memories. Once I took a picture of my boy, splashing in a little pond, of course he gave me couple of sweet pictures, good splash and funny face and then jump in the pond with the shoes.

Your Inspiration?

My inspirations are my kids, with their sweet faces and the thousand different looks they can give me in a few minutes. Of course I obtain inspiration from pretty much everything that surrounds me. If I see an interesting place, I always imagine what good image can be done there; I go home and then go back to the place with the appropriate props, clothes, persons at the right time and light. And that is pretty much the most important thing – to be on the right place at the right time and not to forget the camera at home.

Any advice for our readers?

Always have your camera in your bag, because you never know when you will stumble on something interesting and unique. And you never know when you will hit a place with a beautiful light!

Dachshund and hounds wagging tail to the music of Santos Roman, at times it does look humorous to imagine the posture with all these wonderful creatures. Santos shoots pet animals in his studio, what seems to be more interesting is the poetic and almost human expressions he gains from these 4 legged creatures. Lighting is ample and very professional in assisting the ambience of the entire scene, dogs in almost all the breeds and yes cats too find their way into his portfolio. Mood and emotions from these animals are emphatic and makes us love them even better, kudos for the photographer and his love for animals without which none of these photographs would have been possible.

This would be an absolute treat to watch for any animal lovers, to look at these puffy creatures, their beautiful eyes and wonderful sheen asks us for a warm hug.

Its time we reveal the winner and honorable mentions for our Photo Contest – Portrait of a Stranger.

Close to 700 entries this time and it was a sweet burden for us to finalize through a heap of noteworthy entries. Going with the theme, we expected some new approach and interesting portraits from the photographers and we heartily accept to the fact that most of the entries were brilliant.

Winner

Photographer Name: Ronald Cooley
Photo title: L’Étranger
Description: This photo is most assuredly a Portrait of a Stranger. I took the shot somewhere in midtown Manhattan, as I saw a well-dressed man staring fixedly into a building lobby, hands in pockets. He was half-silhouetted by the sun’s glare, with a pencil thin reflection in the glass. I did not and do not have any idea who it was, nor, I think, would anyone else.

Judges Comments:
Ronald has captured the soul of our theme. A strange and peculiar character with his hands tucked inside pockets provokes me a heroic attitude towards him and the gentle reflection to the frame right creates a great balance to this winning picture. Light is fantastic and mystic, it wants me to know more about this man and his doabouts. Composition is perfectly balanced and phrases some interesting questions about the man and his presence before the closed door.

Honorable Mentions

Photographer Name: Balazs Pataki
Title: Secret
Description: A Kinnauri girl warning me not to share the secret she’s just told me. (Taken in India)

Judges Comments:
Portrait of a complete stranger with a sense of mystery, it makes me wonder what would have been the conversation between the girl and the photographer. It looks so natural and the empty space in the background adds more to the already beautiful picture.

Photographer Name: Ata Mohammad Adnan
Title: Time Travelling

Judges Comments:
Rowing the boat of emotions, melancholy keeps looping on and on as i watch closely to the eyes of this old woman. Again a very natural portrait with lots of emotions which makes me feel for her and wants to hear her untold story. The story of a stranger.

Photographer Name: Mikhail Palinchak
Title: M

Judges Comments:
Capturing the decisive moment is never easy on streets and Michail has shot a brilliant capture with multiple elements adding more drama. I would rather translate the bird as a metaphor in achieving the eye contact with a perfect stranger. The moment of shutter press is grand and this wants me to imagine the aftermath of this photograph.

Photographer Name: Petros Kotzampasis
Title: Smoking Man

Judges Comments:
Looks of a complete stranger lost in a conversation. It could be a start of it or an end to one long episode. The cigar smoke and his eyes greet for an introduction which is very welcoming for me from a stranger. Black and white adds more character to the picture and the composition is commanding too.

Photographer Name: Rene de Bruijn
Title: Destination Unknown

Judges Comments:
The Same old Man we often meet during train journeys, lost in memoirs. This photograph feels dynamic and makes me feel as if I am watching a movie. Character of the old man feels superior and diplomatic asking me to imagine about his past. The lacking clarity or sharpness in the photograph mixes up the mood and ultimately creates more curiousity towards this perfect stranger.

Photographer Name: Swarat Ghosh
Title & Description: None

Judges Comments:
A peculiar photograph of a person within a reflection of another giant building. This picture is very much contemporary to the likes of street photography with other two tombs on the frame right. Textures on the face stirs some anonymity and goes well with the letters on the envelope too. An interesting photograph with elements of curiosity.

Photographer Name: Anne Petitfils
Title: Welcome to Doksa
Description: This photo was taken in August 2011 in Zanskar (North India). This girl is posing in front of the entrance to a “Doksa” (pasture). During the summer months, women in the Zanskar live high in the alpine to graze animals: cows, yaks, dzos, sheep, etc.

Judges Comments:
The gesture and the body language of the little girl is very charming. Her eyes lighting up the photograph with some perfect blend of emotions adds more character to this photograph. Composition is good, Anne has captured the portrait within the girls habitat which i think is exceptional.

Thank You

Finally I must say that my judgement is based on my understanding of the images and my own interpretation towards the theme.

We as a team in 121clicks.com want to confess here that we definitely had a tough time in finalizing the honorable mentions.

We enjoyed looking at all the images, but had to make a decision and select a winner.

All the best. Keep shooting.

Producing Black & White pictures has always been the real aura for any photographer. There has been many instances depicting the importance and significance in creating a monochrome photograph. And arguably there are many quotes and wonderful statements boasting about the importance of shooting a picture in black and white. These pictures have always served their purpose be it a portrait or a landscape. We the photographers in this digital era has acquired this trait from our masters who had given us numerous examples to excel in producing black & white imagery.

In this post of ours, we wanted to insist upon creating a black & white photograph, various factors favoring it and some wonderful tips to enact it. All photos are linked and lead to the sources from which they were taken. Please feel free to explore further works of these photographers on their collections or their personal sites.

Why Black and White

As we all know, it all started in b/w, color wasn’t available straight away for our first generation photographers. Later it was due to improvisation and science made it possible for the second generation photographers to try their fresh minds on film. But b/w never did lose its charm, it was cheap and easily affordable. And then it became a significant style and simple formula to shoot in b/w, most importantly photography in color is difficult when compared to the likes of b/w photography.

Having said that, why would someone in our digital era, look forward to shoot in b/w. This opens us many statements on the nature of monochromatic images and the phycotic vision it induces. When is there is no importance for the character of color in a picture, when u sense a mystery or mood or a strong emotion in a picture, when color may be distracting or would not be doing justice to an existing photograph. It is better we neutralize the color medium into one singular monochromatic image. In other words this may look like a compromise for gaining better results, which is also the sole reason at the end of the day. Few pictures demand this treatment, and few pictures doesn’t have a choice. I believe there are professionals who shoot mono with their digital to increase their vision towards black and white zones.

Zone System

Ansel Adams, one of the pioneers and grand masters of b/w landscape photography came up with a incredible system for looking at a photograph with a finished picture in mind. This brings the concept of previsualization into picture and makes us move forward. Though all of it may sound a bit complicated and mathematical in the beginning, following it will make you master the art of photography technically. Using the zone system is at most a scientific approach in the creation of art. It is about controlling light, calculating the variables and being aware of the subtle changes light can bring into your picture. Dividing between light to dark and partially spreading the balance across your photograph constitutes a lot explaining about the zone system.

Qualities of Light

For better optimization it is mandatory for any artist to understand the concept of light and its integration with the environment or the subject. Various physical properties are responsible while recording the light through your camera sensor. More often it is the reflected light, depending on the intensity of light, contrast is added to the final scene providing more dynamic range in the picture. Remembering the difference between Specular light and Diffused light can help you produce wonders with black and white photography. In simple terms, Specular light is caused when the light source tends to be far away from the subject. There is a high contrast range, and thereby producing bright highlights and sharp-dark shadows. On the other hand, Diffused Light is the soft light, which does not produce harsh shadows and bright hit highlights. Mastering these light variations can help you produce stellar monochrome pictures be it on the outdoor or in your studio.

Exposure

Any Pro would agree to this phrase, Black and white photography is all about Light and Exposure. The approach remains the same in terms of exposure be it film or digital photography. As already said in Zone System, a change in the f-stop could certainly bring change in the zone for any particular part in the frame. In the process of exposing your scene to the shadows, one should have in mind not to overexposure the highlights which might affect the respective midtones as well. Here film acts different to that of digital, every film exposure brings in a S-shaped characteristic curve whereas digital produces a straight line throughout your image range. And finally never darken an overexposed area since it never adds any detail but just results in an unpleasant gray tone, so expose your frame wisely.

Post-Processing

Post-Processing is never a bad word and in fact I personally wouldn’t consider a picture to be complete without moving through the processing pipeline. Vision takes the first step in this final stage of a photograph. What to achieve with processing is rather important, so when considering a black and white picture there are various methods depending upon every individual artist to achieve the final masterpiece. Burning and Dodging would definitely top the order, understanding histogram and utilizing levels/curves to the proximity, as much as your photograph demands is the key thingy. Almost every photographer reading this article would know the nuances of using photoshop, but ultimately one should know when the product is finished. Adding some color tones which could interrelate with core of the photograph, be it the mood or the emotion adding a color tone has its part. Understanding the color theory and experimenting with various tints of colors could enrich your black and white picture.

Silence within a symphony, how could one rather relate to the photographs which has the art of childhood with a rhyme of flute playing soulfully within every child amidst the joy of kinder hood.

Elena Gromova through her photographs makes us forget the daily dizzy world we live in and pronounce her silent art photographs to us. There is a gloominess attached with every picture here, it makes us wonder the heart-lines of the child while portraying for the photograph, and pushes us to draw a world which belongs to them. Smelling tender innocence and extreme purity. Of course Art is pure and Elena proves them through these wonderful creations.

Spare some seconds with every portrait here and am sure it would open up the world which was once familiar to all of us. Beautiful, delicate and yet mystical, the one which was in the middle of our childhood.

Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. “In Genesis, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And it was my privilege to listen.” —Sebastião Salgado

This is more than just a book of photographs. It is a modernist Japanese photograph album created from Oriental fabrics and papers, and bound by hand. It contains the work of Gueorgui Pinkhassov, a highly-acclaimed photographic artist, innovator and member of Magnum. The sense of innovation and artistry is carried through in the photographs which explore how singular details, plays of light and reflection can capture a spirit and shape an atmosphere. The artist’s haiku texts accompany the images.

Presenting her breathtaking photographs alongside revealing interviews with those who knew her best, this volume is the first attempt to put Vivian Maier’s work in context and create a moving portrait of her as an artist. Though she created more than 120,000 negatives during her lifetime, only a few were ever seen by others. Shortly after her death in 2009, the first group of her unseen photographs–gritty with humanity and filled with empathy and beauty–were shown online.

Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) was perhaps the finest and most influential image maker of the twentieth century, and his portraits are among his best-known work. Over a fifty-year period, he photographed some of the most eminent personalities of the era, as well as ordinary people, chosen as subjects because of their striking and unusual features.

This book is a vivid photographic record of daily life in Istanbul from the 1940s to the 1980s. Captured through the unerring lens of the award winning Ara Guler, the Eye of Istanbul, it reflects the city’s melancholy aesthetic as it oscillates between tradition and modernity. Gulers remarkable duotone photographs are accompanied by evocative commentaries from Orhan Pamuk, another leading figure in Turkish culture.

Drawing on 40 years of fieldwork, The Life of a Photograph takes readers on assignment and inside the heart of a master photographer to witness the process of making a truly great picture. This exquisite book is organized by the known and unexpected themes of Abell’s work, ranging from his sensitive Portraits, beautiful Land, Sea, Sky and thought-provoking Wild Life to the surprising Just Looking (quirky scenes encountered on assignment),On the Road (photographs taken from automobiles), and The Built World (human impacts on pristine land).

When Diane Arbus died in 1971 at the age of 48, she was already a significant influence–even something of a legend–for serious photographers, although only a relatively small number of her most important pictures were widely known at the time. The publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph in 1972–along with the posthumous retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art–offered the general public its first encounter with the breadth and power of her achievements.

Mann’s previous collections, Immediate Family and At Twelve, recorded the bodies of children with a frank, slightly detached sensuality at a time when public hysteria around issues of child sexuality was sharply on the rise. The fact that many of the images were of her own children left Mann particularly vulnerable to charges of exploitation. But though controversial, what deflected such accusations was the serene flawlessness of Mann’s pictorialist photographic technique, which somehow contained her very real provocation without necessarily resolving it.

Published by Aperture in 1982 and long unavailable, Stephen Shore’s legendary Uncommon Places has influenced a generation of photographers. Among the first artists to take color beyond advertising and fashion photography, Shore’s large-format color work on the American vernacular landscape stands at the root of what has become a vital photographic tradition.

This gorgeous gift book reveals nearly 50 years of photography by seasoned National Geographic photographer Bill Allard. Allard was a pioneer of color photography with a style that called for entering people’s homes and hearts; by winning their confidence he was able to capture “off guard” moments, and reveal the depth of human nature as never before seen in the pages of National Geographic.

Widely regarded as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century, Garry Winogrand (1928–1984) did much of his best-known work in Manhattan during the 1960s, becoming an epic chronicler of that tumultuous decade. But Winogrand was also an avid traveler and roamed extensively around the United States, bringing exquisite work out of nearly every region of the country.

Ray K. Metzker (b. 1931) is one of the greatest living photographers of the modern era, although his name may not be as broadly familiar as that of some of his peers. Richly illustrated, The Photographs of Ray K. Metzker brings his extraordinary work to the attention of a larger audience, summarizing his life and achievements over the past six decades. With a fresh perspective, curator and author Keith F. Davis explores the roots of Metzker’s innovative vision, from his early interest in photojournalism through his studies with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind at Chicago’s Institute of Design in the late 1950s, and his bold innovations of the 1960s and 1970s.

Journey of Consciousness is a gorgeous three-volume box set of 800 photographs drawn from this master photographer’s immense archive. Chosen by Davidson himself, the selection spans a 60-year career, and features such seminal bodies of work as Circus(1958), Brooklyn Gang(1959), East 100th Street(1966-1968), The Civil Rights Movement(1961-1965), Subway(1980) and Central Park(1992-1995), as well as his two most recent works in progress–a series of urban landscapes made in Paris (2007) and Los Angeles (2009)–and many unpublished photographs.

Armed with a camera and a fresh cache of film and bankrolled by a Guggenheim Foundation grant, Robert Frank crisscrossed the United States during 1955 and 1956. The photographs he brought back form a portrait of the country at the time and hint at its future. He saw the hope of the future in the faces of a couple at city hall in Reno, Nevada, and the despair of the present in a grimy roofscape.

The Photographer’s Eye by John Szarkowski is a twentieth-century classic–an indispensable introduction to the visual language of photography. Based on a landmark exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in 1964, and originally published in 1966, the book has long been out of print. It is now available again to a new generation of photographers and lovers of photography in this duotone printing that closely follows the original.

Minimalism in Street Photography is an interesting concept and a simple shortcut in taking your photography to the next level. Composition is of-course the everything when approaching a minimal shot, various elements are taken into consideration, such as where to position your subject inside the frame, balancing your composition, and most importantly allowing more space inside the frame since it is supposed to be a frame of minimalism. There has to be a lot of patience when trying this concept especially in streets since, it is hard to frame a singular subject with the desired punctum inside your frame, hence it is better to plan your shot before you press the shutter.

For example, choose the right background, pre-compose your frame and wait for the right subject to appear inside your frame, this one of the finest methods which would never let you down. Also choosing some deserted streets can produce great results, shooting during early hours of morning with ample light could enrich your photographs with wonderful lighting too.

Here, in this post we have handpicked some astonishing color minimalistic shots of streets for you to inspire from and rejoice too.
